Thursday 3rd April

Course fee: £170.00
Because of the confusion of myth, history, and supposition that surrounds the Tarot, the absolute origin and meaning of the cards is probably always going to remain an enigma. There are many different ways we can view and interpret the Tarot. Subsequently any understanding of them will be influenced by one's personal beliefs. My own perspectives have evolved through many years of extensive study of the cards and associated practices, combined with the practical experience of delivering several thousand hours of professional consultations.
Tarot is a hugely diverse subject, many aspects of which merit individual consideration. The purpose of this course is to give the novice a basic introduction to the wide potential contained within these mysterious cards. Over this introductory course we will:
Learn about some of the philosophy and history surrounding the Tarot.
Examine the cards individually and collectively.
Have the opportunity to undertake experiential work with them.
Explore the creative possibilities of using the Tarot in our own lives.
Course Outline
Week 1
Introduction Evening. A chance to get acquainted with the tarot, with the course, and with each other.
Week 2
Archetypes & the Major Arcana. The archetypes are considered to be fundamental to the Major Arcana. This is a very brief introduction to this complex and ethereal concept.
Week 3
Personalities & the Court Cards. Utilising two common methods of Personality Typing to help familiarise us with the characteristics of the Court Cards.
Spread No 1 - The Overview.
Week 4
Elements & Numbers. The final building blocks. Combining the qualities of the element with the energy of the number helps us to interpret the number cards.
Spread No 2 - The Celtic Cross.
Week 5
Number Cards. Finishing off by learning about the last cycle of cards from 5 to 10.
Spread No 3 - The Snapshot.
Week 6
First Readings. Developing the storytelling method of reading. Fitting the content to a context.
Week 7
Putting it all together. An opportunity to put into practice everything that you have learned over the past six weeks.
Questions & Answers.
Some course materials will be provided but you will need to bring along notepads and pens, and of course, your own cards.
Please note:
Tarot is a much more complex subject than people tend to imagine, because of the limited class times students should be prepared to do some study at home to get the most out of the course. There are so many different decks available these days that choosing your first Tarot pack can often be a fairly bewildering experience. Some questions arise quite frequently:
Is there a difference between a Tarot deck and divination cards?
What traditions do different Tarot packs relate to?
Do they have to be given to me?
Counter staff at Mysteries will be happy to answer any questions that you might have.
This course is based on the imagery established by the Rider-Waite deck, therefore my advice is to choose a pack that stays close to these guidelines. There are many decks available, all with very different design and colouring. Have a look for yourself and see what appeals to your own eye.
Recommended Decks:
Any Rider-Waite; Hanson-Roberts; Morgan Greer; Robin Wood; Aquarian; New Palladini; Mythic.
